The main concern in my paintings is to go beyond what I already know. I do not have any preconceived ideas as to how a painting will eventually be resolved. My painting process is immediate.

Surface is very important in my work because it creates depth. It allows me to introduce broken down components that show a relationship to each other. Sometimes I use a grid to bring order but I always allow the unexpected to occur. I also use paper and printed relief forms to create fragments that bring a complexity to the work. These forms are made of wood or rubber and are cut into shapes. I then carve these forms and create images within them. Paint is used for contrast. The goal is that these components exist in harmony on the canvas.

My painting is influenced by Jasper Johns and Eva Hesse. Johns, because of the incorporation of objects, and knowing what one sees to be true. Hesse, because of her fascination with material and process.

A painting in progress can change quickly and radically or it call be a slow process. I am intrigued with organic shapes and forms and am challenged to explore and interpret them through my art. I develop and foster an energy between the surface of the canvas and myself while seeking to bring harmony and order to the chaos of the fragmented forms.
